چکیده

In previous studies (l-3) cortisol (hydrocortisone) was isolated and identified from the urine of the normal and the scorbutic guinea pig. However, paper partition chromatography of extracts of guinea pig urine (2) revealed that in addition to cortisol several other blue tetrazolium-reducing steroids were present. The possibility existed that some of these steroids were metabolites of endogenous cortisol, and it was believed that an understanding of the metabolic pathways operating in this animal would aid in the evaluation of corticosteroid excretion patterns under normal and pathological conditions. The study of the metabolism of cortisol in this animal therefore was undertaken.

Effect of scurvy on cholesterol and ascorbic acid in guinea pig adrenals.

It has been shown earlier (1) that the metabolism of carbohydrate is disturbed in scorbutic guinea pigs as evidenced by diminished glucose tolerance, deposition of liver glycogen, and insulin content of the pancreas. Although the adrenalin content of the adrenals of scorbutic guinea pigs is increased, it has been shown by removing the adrenal medulla that adrenalin is not responsible for the lo...

The effect of natural adjuvants (G2, G2F) on lung inflammation of sensitized guinea pigs

Objective: The effects of natural adjuvants were examined on total and differential WBC counts in lung lavage of sensitized guinea pigs. Materials and Methods: In three sensitized groups of guinea pigs including: untreated sensitized animals (S), sensitized animals treated with adjuvant G2 (S+G2) and G2F (S+G2F) as well as non-sensitized group (C) (n=6 for each group), total and differential WB...

INCREASED HISTAMINE Hi RECEPTOR BLOCKADE BY CHLORPHENIRAMINE IN TRACHEAL CHAINS OF ASTHMATIC GUINEA PIGS

Receptor affinity and drug delivery to the receptor sites could be determinant factors for the increased bronchial responsiveness seen in asthma. Competitive antagonism blockade which is measured as dose ratio-l (DR-I) depends only on these two factors. Therefore, in this study we have examined histamine HI blockade by chlorpheniramine on isolated tracheal chains of asthmatic compared to co...

Evaluation of the Effect of Onosma Bracteatum Wall (Boraginaceae) On Bronchial Hyperreactivity in Sensitized Guinea Pigs

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways. The available treatment options have major limitations owing to low efficacy, associated adverse events and compliance issues. Therefore, the health burden of bronchial asthma is increasing globally at an alarming rate, providing a strong impetus for the development of new therapeutics. Onosma bracteatum ( O. bracteatum ) is know...

Effect of aqueous fraction of Rosa damascena on ileum contractile response of guinea pigs

Objective: The use of drugs with herbal origin is increasing for treatment of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. Rosa damascena (R. damascena) is a well-known plant suggested to have beneficial effect on GI system. In this study, the effect of aqueous fraction of R. damascena on the contractionsofisolated guinea pig ileum was investigated. Materials and Methods: Aqueous fraction of plant was obta...
